    Horizon™ Invest

Horizon™ Invest Education Edition launching at the SAFe Summit on March 23rd!

    Let's Talk

A Note to the SAFe® Community from Luke Hohmann

I've spent a lot of time in rooms with portfolio leaders who are trying to learn Lean Portfolio Management, and I've watched the same moment happen over and over again.

The theory lands. The principles make sense. People nod along through Strategic Investment Funding and Portfolio Strategy. And then someone asks the question that stops the room:

"How do we actually decide which initiatives get funded?"

And the honest answer, in most organizations, is: spreadsheets. Email chains. A planning meeting where the loudest voice sets the agenda and the most polished presenter wins the budget.

That's not portfolio management. That's politics.

I've been working on this problem for years as a SAFe course co-creator, as a practitioner, and as someone who has spent an embarrassing amount of time reading the research on how groups make decisions well versus how they think they make decisions well. What I've learned is that the process matters as much as the principles. And that without a structured, repeatable process for investment decision-making, even the most committed LPM teams default back to the old way.

That's why we built Horizon Invest.

And today, I'm thrilled to introduce Horizon Invest — Education Edition: purpose-built for SPCs, A-SPCs, and SPCTs who want to bring real investment decision-making into their classrooms, workshops, and leadership learning experiences.

What this means for you as a trainer or coach

When you're teaching LPM, you now have a platform that lets your learners experience the process rather than just diagram it on a whiteboard. Horizon Invest Education Edition gives you a ready-to-run simulation environment where participants can:

    • Review investment proposals described in a consistent, structured format, so they understand what "apples to apples" comparison actually feels like
    • Cast individual votes using Endorse, Consent, and Cannot Consent, privately, before any group discussion, the way Annie Duke's research says it should work
    • Come together as a group and see their alignment (or lack of it) revealed in real time, then practice the facilitated conversation that turns a contested portfolio into a funded plan

I've seen what happens when learners go through this experience. The concepts stop being abstract. And when they go back to their organizations, they go back with a process they can actually use.

A word about data and where this lives

For my colleagues in Europe: Horizon is hosted on AWS in Germany and is architected from the ground up to address EU data sovereignty requirements. Your data stays in the EU. Full stop. I know this matters enormously for many of you, and I wanted to say it plainly rather than bury it in a terms-of-service footnote.

I'll be in Amsterdam. Come find me.

The SAFe Summit is one of my favorite events of the year, and I'm particularly excited about this one. I'll be there March 23 through 27, and I would genuinely love to talk with you. Whether you're curious about the Education Edition, want to dig into the research behind the voting process, or just want to argue with me about how SAFe handles portfolio backlogs, I'm here for all of it. (I have opinions.)

If you'd like to set aside some dedicated time, use the form and we'll find a moment. But I'm also easy to find in the hallways. Just look for the person who gets unreasonably animated talking about decision-making in groups.

    See you in Amsterdam.
